Call for Contributions: Gender, Sex and Sexuality Research Day: Friday 23 September 2011

Founded in 2010, the Durham Gender and Sexualities Research Network (GASRN) provides a forum for academics and postgraduates from all departments to discuss and develop their research on gender, sex and sexuality. We are delighted to announce that GASRN activities in 2011-12 will begin with the inaugural Gender, Sex and Sexualities Research Day on Friday 23 September, Joachim Room, Hilde and Bede.

The research day will run as a series of fairly informal interdisciplinary workshop-style sessions organised around specific themes. We hope it will showcase the breadth and depth of gender, sex and sexualities research in Durham, provide opportunities for people to meet like-minded researchers from other departments and disciplines, and make us feel energised, emboldened and even empowered in our work.

To that end, we are calling for proposals – not for beautifully polished conference papers, but rather for pithy 10-minute provocations on any of the following topics:

• Excerpts from your work in progress: what are you tackling, and how?
• Disciplinary interventions: does your field need a change in direction?
• Theory fan club: whose ideas animate your research, and why?
• Methodological leaps and bounds in Gender, Sex, and Sexualities research

Each session will begin with a number of ‘provocations’ and then open out into a broader cross-disciplinary discussion.

If you would like to stimulate the debate, we would love to hear your ideas. Please send us a proposal with your name, department, title and 100 word abstract. Postgraduate proposals are strongly encouraged. If there are keywords or concepts that help frame or explain your work, don’t hesitate to include them. Proposals should be sent to Angela Woods by 30 June and we will be in touch during July to confirm your participation before advertising the programme more widely.
